Belonging and representation are critical for student and family success in education. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are about more than gender and race and ethnicity. While those are the most visible aspects, diversity includes the many dimensions that distinguish and connect people, including mental, emotional, psychological and physical disabilities; learning styles; geographic residence; languages used; cultural heritage; educational level and more.
Recognizing the value of differences is one part of a PTA initiative. Inclusion is the glue that makes diversity stick. To quote Verna Myers, “Diversity is being invited to the dance, inclusion is being asked to dance.” This means reaching out to people, engaging them in ways that address their needs and perspectives, and encouraging all families to become actively involved in PTA activities and membership.
